PSLA

social networking for the teacher-librarians of Pennsylvania

This is not going to be a long blog. I just wanted to mention that the list of the 2008 Edgar nominees is available. The finalists for the categories have not been chosen yet, but you can get a good idea of some young adult and children's mysteries that you may not have had a chance to read or maybe you have not even heard about. I think the Get A Clue summer reading program that public libraries used during the summer will really help get more students interested in mysteries. It is good to have resources available for us to use so we can read reviews of books that maybe we would not have previously considered. The Edgar awards have a children's and a young adult category unlike some of the other big mystery awards. Check out the current submissions (more may be added) at http://www.mysterywriters.org/pages/awards/submissions.htm You can also look at the 2007 final nominees and winners.

Thanks for sharing the link. On the site I noticed the 2007 Edgars YA winner was Buried by Robin Merrow MacCready. Of the five nominees that was the only one I wasn’t familiar with. In SLJ the reviewer of Buried states, “The shocking final scene is overly dramatic and unsatisfying, and Claude's realizations about herself and her mother are not believable.” Ouch! Have you read Buried? Can you offer any thoughts?
