Your assessment of the day is absolutely accurate. The halls should have been resounding with concern rather than with echoes. It seems the legislators are most concerned with the poses they strike in order to win the next election. Whoever has the dollars to stuff in their campaign chests are the ones being heard, not the students, not the disposed, not the disabled.
I am perhaps too cynical about their seeming disinterest but I have lost faith in the system when the political climate is so polarized and so filled with self-interest rather than communal good and genuine care for the community.
